An illusion is a type of creature summoned by a mesmer that serves to draw aggro and fight alongside the caster. They attack only one foe — generally the one targeted by the mesmer when created — until one or the other is destroyed. If the target runs away, the illusion will lock on the next nearest target. You can however have multiple illusions attacking separate targets by casting spells that create illusions on three targets separately.
There are two kinds of illusions, clones and phantasms:
- Clones are visual copies of the caster: they have the same name and wield the same weapon, but have little health and do hardly any damage. Their primary purpose is to distract foes and draw aggro. They can also be shattered for additional effects.
- Phantasms look similar to their creator, but are more obviously illusions: they are nearly transparent with a purple glow, have a unique name, and use unique skills. Phantasms are converted to clones once they perform their attack, which does considerably more damage than clones'.

Mechanics

- Same as mesmer: Power, Precision, Condition Damage & Duration, Boon Duration, Critical Damage, armor, and Healing Power. Illusions will benefit from the mesmer's might stacks, as well as any effects that increase the above stats, such as Banner of Discipline or Spotter.
- Not inherited from personal stats: Vitality, and secondary +(%Damage), +(%Critical Chance), or +(%Condition Damage); for example, Superior Sigil of Force, Superior Sigil of Bursting, Superior Sigil of Accuracy, Superior Rune of the Berserker (sixth bonus), or Superior Rune of the Ranger (sixth bonus) does not affect the Illusions.
- Illusion stats, which includes the ones that can not be inherited (health/vitality), can be modified by various skills, traits, boons, or conditions.
